The world is focussing on the technological advancements in the hope of a better future. But we often forget more than anything else; our future depends upon the health of our planet. Humans have taken the planet earth for granted, and its health is deteriorating. Without a healthy planet, all the efforts and hopes of a better future are worthless.
Thankfully, futuristic technologies such as Artificial Intelligence are put to work to save planet earth.
An AI-based system detects harmful bacteria in the water
Safe drinking water is still out of reach for many. According to WHO, Every minute a newborn dies from the infection caused by lack of safe water and an unclean environment. Often, testing and confirming a clean water source requires expensive test equipment and manual analysis of the results.
Peter Ma, an Intel® Software Innovator, has successfully developed an artificial intelligence based system to evaluate the purity of water sources, it identifies bacteria using pattern recognition and machine learning. The best part is that it does not require any expensive machinery or testing equipment. Only a digital microscope connected to a laptop computer running the Ubuntu operating system and the Intel® Movidius™ Neural Compute Stick is all it requires. After analysis, contamination sites are marked on a map in real time. This can potentially save thousands of lives.
AI can help in conserving Energy
We often use more amount of energy than we truly require. Though today the world is focusing on the renewable source of power still a large percentage of energy consumed comes from nonreusable sources such as coal and oil. Therefore it’s high time for us to be sensitive about the amount of energy we are consuming. Artificial Intelligence based Nest’s Learning Thermostat is providing an easy solution to this problem.
This AI based thermostat adjusts the temperature according to one’s lifestyle. For example, it observes the daily schedule of the individuals and programmes itself to adjust the temperature, thereby saving a lot of energy that gets wasted as people often forget to switch off the system while leaving for work. The Nest Thermostat can use sensors and your phone’s location to check if you’ve gone, then sets itself to an Eco Temperature to save energy.
AI monitors animal traffic
Artificial Intelligence is proving to be an aid for Monitoring animal traffic. Scientists have developed artificial intelligence (AI) based system to automatically identify, count and describe animals in their natural habitats. The ai-based system will improve our ability to study, conserve and take measures to save wildlife and precious ecosystems.
Margaret Kosmala from Harvard University in the US said “Not only does the artificial intelligence system tell you which of 48 different species of animal is present, but it also tells you how many there are and what they are doing. It will tell you if they are eating, sleeping, if babies are present, etc.”
Further Connecterra a Dutch company, has created an app called “Intelligent Dairy Farmer Assistant” that is intended to help farmers track down their cows. App tells when the cow is walking, lying down, drinking, eating, or chewing the cud and even can predict when a cow will get sick, gets ready to breed based on predictive analysis and deep learning.
Artificial Intelligence is still, and scientists are continuously exploring more and more areas where they can put AI on work. So far the start is great, and it’s in our hands how the future will shape up.
